Dominican Republic

Helping Live Life in Family & Community, Free of Fear & Violence

Kids Alive DR has invested in a holistic approach that has contributed to healthier and safer families and communities. The DR programs serve over 4,000 children and family members annually. Over the years, the communities we operate in have become stronger and more secure.

The holistic approach offers access to life skills that foster independence and service. Over the years, the Ministry of Education has recognized that our teams’ work is impactful. We look forward to a stronger formal partnership where the government will provide additional support.

By working with government partners and like-minded organizations, we can create more impact in our communities and help many more children and families live free of fear and violence.

Guatemala

Fostering Protective Care

Kids Alive Guatemala has developed, accredited, and supports almost 20% of the 62 foster families in Guatemala. This has happened in a short time after we were told no one in Guatemala would be interested in fostering children - especially children who are older, have challenging behaviors, and may also have a child.

The journey to accrediting and supporting foster families is a challenging one. There are approximately 4,000 children in protective custody in Guatemala. And there is a need for each of them to experience the love of a family when it can’t be their biological one.

The KAG team works primarily with churches to raise awareness of the need for families, train families, help them get accredited, and provides follow-up support. This year the team presented to over 1700 people in their quest to find families that will create the bonds that mend for children who need them.

Haiti

Bringing Increased Support through Restorative Education

In a country severely impacted by natural disasters, political strife, and unrest, children and families have endured many traumas and are at high risk for abuse or neglect. Kids Alive Haiti’s restorative education programming offers a safe refuge for kids to be kids and for healing to happen.

Kids Alive Haiti has been able to serve not only the children from its community but has also welcomed displaced children along with their families. During the summer, KAH offered a month-long summer camp so children could have a safe space to play, learn about God, and gain life skills. Teachers, social workers, and psychologists have offered trauma-responsive support and restorative education to more than 500 students this school year.

The Kids Alive Haiti team has also positively impacted the community by providing training on child protection to students and staff at 12 different schools in the area, reaching more than 3,600 students and 200 staff.

Peru

Healing Communities through Family Strengthening

Sexual violence is prevalent and complex, and it is often difficult for victims to seek help or justice. With survivors we’ve served leading the charge, Kids Alive Peru has been supporting the development of a survivor’s network - a resource that offers support to its members and advocates for other survivors of sexual violence. These women are incredibly strong and are on a journey to strengthen their own families and communities and make help and justice more accessible.

KAP was asked to partner with local schools, leveraging our multidisciplinary teams of social workers, psychologists, counselors, and lawyers to help implement the “Playing Makes Us Stronger” program with a primary focus on violence prevention. So far this year, they have worked with over 1,500 students and have provided parenting skills workshops to over 100 parents. These collective efforts help strengthen individuals, families, and communities on their journey to realizing justice that heals and bonds that mend.
